GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL
Admission to this six-week summer residential program is extremely competitive. Governor’s School West is held at Meredith College, and Governor’s School East is at Salem College. Juniors may apply in a variety of academic and art areas. Sophomores cannot apply for academic areas but may be selected for the arts if there are vacancies unfilled by juniors. Applications are due in October. Applicants in academic areas are screened at the county level and then final selections are made by a committee in Raleigh. SUMMER VENTURES IN SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS
This is a four-week residential program for sophomores and juniors interested in science and math. Students are assigned to one of six UNC campuses and can select studies in a specialized area of math or science. BOYS' STATE AND GIRLS' STATE

This is a summer weekend program for high-achieving minority students. Students are invited to attend a summer weekend at UNC-Chapel Hill to experience campus life and learn more about academic programs. Any interested junior should see your counselor for further details. FREE!
These summer research opportunities are held at both UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina A & T. They are summer residential programs for minority students interested in a variety of science careers. Students have an opportunity to study advanced topics in science and to conduct research under the guidance of college professors. Deadline is March 31. This is a one-week leadership camp held at Guilford College. The local ROTARY Club selects two juniors from the county to attend. See your counselor for further information. FREE!
This program provides juniors with a one-week internship in Washington, DC in February or March plus a $5,000 scholarship. Two students are selected from North Carolina. See your counselor for details about the application process. Applications are due in October. FREE!
This is a one-week internship in Raleigh’s Office of the Governor for students ages 15 – 18. Students must have a minimum "B" average. Applications are accepted year-round, and participants are responsible for all costs involved. Students are encouraged to do this program during the summer months rather than miss school.
LEGISLATOR'S SCHOOL FOR YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
This summer residential program is held on the campus of Western Carolina University. Legislators’ School teaches leadership and community service skills to participants. The program is open to students in ninth and tenth grades who demonstrate leadership potential. Students who are identified as academically gifted are not eligible to apply for this program. FREE!

CAMP MED HEALTH CAREERS AWARENESS CAMP AT SURRY COMMUNITY COLLEGE
This is a 5-day program for high school students. Students take trips to local hospitals and learn about opportunities in health related careers. Applications are due in May. See Mrs. Brewer or your counselor for information. FREE!
Sophomores may apply to spend a week participating in leadership training and other activities. Applications are due in April. The cost for the program is $100.
This is a one-week residential program at UNC – Chapel Hill for students who are juniors or seniors. Students will explore opportunities in the field of nursing. The program is highly competitive and limited to 36 students state-wide. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applications are due in March. The tuition is $250, and a limited number of scholarships are available for the program.
Design Camp students work with College of Design faculty on projects from each of the College disciplines—architecture, landscape architecture, industrial design, art and design, and graphic design. In addition to studio projects, students attend lectures from highly respected design professionals. Sophomores and juniors are eligible to attend, and the cost is $600. Applications are due in May.
